Controversies

Parole board responsibility for delays in releasing tabled individuals

Senator Katie Wallace pressed Catherine Rodriguez and Rodrigo Leveno on what is keeping tabled individuals in prison, stating 'It is not fair to keep people in prison who have served their time and are waiting to get out and are simply in there only because those resources don't exist,' and asking whether it is fair for the board to tell the legislature that more resources are needed. Catherine Rodriguez acknowledged that delays in approved parole plans are handled by 'the division of parole, which is separate from us,' effectively indicating the board does not control that part of the process.

Notable Quotes

“I was told that obtaining those records would cost approximately $4,000. That was deeply discouraging. For any young person, especially one who has grown up in foster care. Being denied meaningful access to their own history because of cost sends a painful message.”

Shermie Houston — Houston, a person with lived experience in foster care, testified in support of HB 1234, which seeks to improve adult access to child abuse and neglect records. She described being told by Boulder County that obtaining her own foster care records would cost approximately $4,000.
