Controversies

Coach liability and over-caution under SB 60

Representative Ron Weinberg argued that coaches and others would become so cautious that children without concussions would be 'barred for two weeks at a time because the liabilities are so large,' and stated he could not support the bill. Representative Hamrick's amendment L005 addressed liability concerns by narrowing civil liability protections to avoid overlap with existing governmental immunity or volunteer protection laws, but Weinberg still voted no.

Notable Quotes

“This money is not the state's money. It is the child's money. When the state intervenes in a family and removes a child, they have an obligation to provide for that child. Children without Social Security benefits are not obligated to pay for any of their own care. It is only children who can qualify for these benefits who pay the state.”

Ashley Chase, Office of the Child's Representative — Chase testified in support of HB 1347, which requires counties to screen foster children for SSI benefits and account for how those funds are spent.
