Controversies

Amendment L005 to SB26-105 — whether a 'positive reinforcing statement' was necessary

Representative Chair Richardson introduced L005 as a positive statement ensuring coroners are not precluded from working in their day job, arguing it would reassure small-county coroners who are not paid full time. Representatives Morrow [UNCLEAR SPELLING] and Martinez opposed it, with Morrow [UNCLEAR SPELLING] stating: 'our amendment and our bill does not preclude them in any way from being a corner and actually being paid, they can fulfill the office. What it is, is a full transparency bill.' The sponsors explicitly requested a no vote. The amendment failed 6 to 5.

Notable Quotes

“The behavior is normalized because we have allowed it to be. AAA foundation research finds that speeding carries the lowest social disapproval of any risky driving behavior that we track. Oh, I'm going a few over. It's no big deal. Everybody does it. Oh, everybody does. 90 on I25. Nearly half of all drivers admit to exceeding the freeway speed limit by 15 miles per hour in the past month. Not five over. 15 over. This is not the fringe anymore. This is the driving culture we have built and that has changed radically in the last five years.”

Skyler McKinley, representing AAA — McKinley, speaking on behalf of AAA and its 800,000 members, argued in support of SB26-035 by describing how widespread and socially accepted dangerous speeding has become.

And it's a very, very simple little bill simply stating that it requires coroners to file written disclosures of their financial interests in specific specified businesses regulated by their respective offices within 30 days of taking office or 30 days of acquiring the financial interest, whichever is later. The filing is a public record. And we do have two amendments. If you'd like me to explain. We can do that at the amendment phase. Representative Martinez. Thank you, Madam Chair.…
