I want to begin by grounding us in something that too often gets lost when we talk about strangulation in legal terms. Strangulation is not a moment that escalated too far. It is not a fight gone wrong. It's a message. It's one person placing their hands around another person's throat and saying without words, I decide if you live or die. Even when a survivor lives, that message does not leave them. It stays in their body and in their mind. The research is clear. Far too often, the person who sends that message follows through.
